According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) “The U.S. has sustained 230 weather and climate disasters since 1980 where overall damages/costs reached or exceeded $1 billion”. “The total cost of these 230 events exceeds $1.5 trillion.”. Those figures are certainly a sobering reminder of the times we are living in. What those numbers don’t account for though are the numerous events that didn’t reach $1 billion in damages/costs. Chances are that we have either personally experienced or know of someone who has been affected by some sort of catastrophe or disaster such as a tornado, hurricane, flooding, wildfire, etc.

Are you prepared?

It can be all too easy to fall into the trap of thinking ‘nothing will happen here where I live’. While it may be true that none of the disasters mentioned may have happened in your area for many years or decades, if ever, there can be other disasters that we may not have considered before. For example, many in the U.S. may not be aware that they live not too far from a nuclear reactor and, while generally not catastrophic, accidents can and do happen. Those and other types of industrial accidents in addition to the more common disasters can prompt the evacuation of homes unexpectedly.
